The Mimic by Clandestine Devices is a pinpoint clitoral vibe with “fins” for labial stimulation. It’s shaped like a manta ray, and Peepshow Toys uses that verbiage on their site, although no reference to “manta ray” is on the box. Still, it looks like a majestic sea flap flap, and it’s named for one of the most formidable foes in just about any role playing game. Also worthy of note: Steve Irwin, animal expert, was killed by a sting ray some years ago. If all of that isn’t foreshadowing, I don’t know what is.
The Mimic measures 3.5″ long and 3.5″ wide at it’s longest and widest points. The “head” and “fins” taper down to flexible silicone tips. The motor housing lies in the middle. It’s rechargeable and waterproof. The charging port is under a flap on the back of the toy, and has a special USB charging cord you’d better not lose. The base LED lights light up when turned on, and blink while charging or low on battery. The lights hold steady when it’s fully charged. However, the manual insists you charge it for 2 hours when first out of the box.
The buttons are easy to press with clicky haptic feedback, but not so easy to press you accidentally hit them while in use.
It’s lightweight and palm sized, and designed to fit well in your hand. The pointed flaps allow for pinpoint or moderately broad stimulation, but be forewarned: your whole hand will vibrate.
The Mimic includes a chintzy satin toy bag for storage. The satin-finish silicone doesn’t attract lint or cat hair too easily, though. Being silicone, it’s easy to clean with regular soap & water or a 10% bleach solution to sanitize. It comes in seafoam, black, and lilac.
For about $100, I expect a certain level of performance out of a toy. After all, the We-Vibe Tango is only about $80, and has earned a permanent spot on my nightstand. I think the Mimic will live in the bottom depths of a drawer from now on. On paper, it seems like a good idea. Fins for labia stimulation. An ergonomic design that’s supposed to fit in the palm of your hand. Pleasing-to-press buttons. Rechargeable. In practice, though, it’s buzzy, stingy, and painful for me.
The Mimic was not designed for fleshier outer labia or a buried clitoris. My clitoris isn’t buried, but I could see how someone with a less prominent one would have issues, but I still have to angle and press it in just right to get the reach I need. The outside flaps prevent the front tip from dipping down into the vulva without spreading the outer labia apart. Despite being flexible, there’s too much resistance. It’s hard to get any pressure on my clitoris. I can open my labia and shove the body of the toy against my clitoris, but then the flaps become uncomfortable. I can’t not do this, because the front flap isn’t long enough to hit the right spot of my clitoris otherwise.
When you turn it on, it vibrates in the middle of its intensities, like the Lovehoney Desire G-spotter. As in, you have to press the – button to go down to the gentlest vibration. I’ll never understand why companies insist on doing this. If you don’t think people will use the lower-level vibration, why have lower-level vibration? Otherwise, you’re intentionally denying people a ramp-up, which is what my body prefers. And I know I’m not the only one.
Then there’s the motor. If only Clandestine Devices had put some thought into the motor, it might have saved this toy. But no, it’s weak and painfully buzzy. When I say painfully buzzy, I mean the pinpoint front flap stings whatever it touches, and the outer flaps, though they don’t carry vibration well, result in an itchy experience for my outer labia. There’s no escape for my hand, which has to endure the vibrations until it goes numb.
All of this pain and irritation for the bargain price of $99? Um, no.
The Mimic is a failure as far as I’m concerned. They put more thought into their smartphone-like packaging than the motor. I can’t forgive that. I hated every time I had to test this toy. I wanted to throw it across the room. If you’re in the market for a pinpoint rechargeable vibe that’s worth a damn, the We-Vibe Touch is comparable in price, and the We-Vibe Tango is priced a bit less. Those motors are strong and rumbly, and won’t leave you with the sting of buyer’s remorse.
